September

Everything a little sparser
Parsley with its yellow edges
Purple thistle begins the fade
We have to pull curled lettuce

And although cone flowers
start to droop and drop
A stand of yellow autumn blooms
appears fiercely as if to protest

The cat begins to limp
in the early sun sink
September always when my heart
begins to break
